I love a good story, particularly of the unexplained. I think that is an inherently southern thing, to be surrounded in mysterious tales. I would venture a guess that the South boasts the most ghost stories of any region in our country….of course, we likely boast the most crazy people as well, but I digress.
If you are new to North Carolina you may not know about the Brown Mountain Lights. As Our State magazine put it in their recent article on the Brown Mountain Lights: “…if the cardinal is our state bird and the dogwood is our flower — the Brown Mountain Lights are our mystery.”
Side Note: If you haven’t ever picked up an Our State magazine, do yourself a favor, and get the next issue you see. In the digital age, this is a magazine you will want to have on your coffee table. The pictures are stunning and the stories make you feel like you are home. I am not getting paid to say that, I just love the magazine, and it is all about NC! There are probably 10 potential road trips in each issue. Have I mentioned I love it?
Back to the Brown Mountain Lights. What are they? Basically they are lights that show up randomly and can be seen over the Brown Mountains from the Blue Ridge Parkway. Nobody knows what they are or where they come from, or why. Most of the tales about the lights have to do with someone carrying a lantern searching for something, like their missing head.. you know, the usual lore.
Confession: I have never seen them or even tried! I do know someone who has seen them though, does that count? I am pledging here today that this summer I will go stake out the lights and report back.
How about you? Have you seen them or tried to? Tell us about it in the comments! If you go this summer I’d love to hear about it too!
